The Role of Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) in Postoperative Healing in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: Clinical, Histological, and Imaging Approaches

The present doctoral dissertation provides a multidimensional investigation into novel diagnostic and therapeutic modalities that support tissue regeneration and improve clinical outcomes in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The first study confirmed the reliability and clinical applicability of the EINSTAR 3D scanner for facial soft tissue assessment. The scanner showed high measurement consistency and clinically acceptable accuracy, while its non-invasive digital workflow makes it a valuable tool for diagnosis and postoperative follow-up in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The second study, a randomized controlled clinical trial, evaluated the effect of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) membranes on postoperative recovery after apicoectomy. PRF significantly reduced postoperative pain and facial swelling, assessed by 3D surface imaging, and improved short-term quality of life measured with the PROMIS-29+2 Profile. These findings suggest a potential beneficial effect of PRF on early postoperative recovery and support its further investigation as an adjunct in periapical surgery. The third study describes the use of a composite graft consisting of albumin-coated bone allograft (BoneAlbumin) and PRF following multiple cystectomies in a patient with Gorlin–Goltz syndrome. Micro-CT and histomorphometric analyses documented bone remodeling in the augmented areas at three and six months, providing preliminary observations on the healing characteristics of the composite graft. Together, these studies support the clinical potential of regenerative biomaterials and digital imaging in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Further large-scale studies are needed to confirm these findings and optimize clinical protocols.
